Operatives assisting work being undertaken on the UK gas networks.


To provide learners with basic skills and knowledge to undertake work safely on the UK gas networks.


Candidates to achieve City & Guilds Level 1 Certificate in Network Construction Opeartions(Gas) and Energy & Utility Skills accreditation, which is a mandatory minimum requirement for persons undertaking work on the UK Gas Network.

To enable candidates to demonstrate competence against the EUS framework, allowing Gas Industry Registration Scheme (GIRS) status to be achieved with Lloyd’s Register.

Candidates must obtain 17 credits from the mandatory units and a minimum of 2 credits from the optional units available.

On completion of the Level 1 Certificate candidates may  progress onto the Level 2 Diplomas, specialising in main laying or service laying.


The course will help to develop technical skills in areas such as excavating, welding operations, operating tools & machinery, installation & maintenance of services while maintaining safety standards.

The content includes:

  • Level 1 scheme briefing and portfolio development
  • Fire Control
  • Emergency First Aid

  • Breathing Apparatus

  • Health, Safety and Environmental Legislation

  • Jointing Techniques

  • Testing and Purging

  • Use of tools and equipment associated with Gas Network Operations.

  • Avoidance of underground utilities

  • Basic Signing Lighting & Guarding (NRSWA)


Trainer/Assessor led theory and practical sessions, including awarding body written and practical assessments.


There are no formal entry requirements, however candidates must have the potential and opportunity to gain the qualification successfully. Candidates should possess a current SHEA Gas Safety, Health and Environmental Awareness competency. Additional training can be provided if required.
