Gas Operatives identified as potential team leaders, installing, maintaining or replacing gas main installations within the UK gas network.


To provide the skills, knowledge and competence to enable individuals to install and maintain assets (gas mains) to national standards.


Candidates to achieve City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Network Construction Operations (Gas) - Main layer, leading to Energy & Utility Skills accreditation, which is a mandatory requirement for individuals undertaking main laying activities on the UK gas network. To enable candidates to demonstrate competence against the EUS framework, allowing Gas Industry Registration Scheme (GIRS) status to be achieved with Lloyd’s Register.

Candidates must obtain a number of credits from the mandatory units depending on the pathway chosen:

44 credits - Main layer (Self lay) 

51 credits - Main layer (Distribution)

62 credits - Main layer (Repair & Maintenance) 

Further optional units are also available as part of the scheme.

This qualification is an opportunity for progression for learners who have already completed the Level 1 Certificate in Network Construction Operations (Gas).


The course will help to develop technical skills in areas such as excavating, welding operations, operating tools & machinery, installation & maintenance of services while maintaining safety standards.

The content includes:


Trainer/Assessor led theory and practical sessions, including awarding body written and practical assessments.


Candidates should possess a current SHEA gas safety, health and environmental awareness competency. Additional training can be provided if required.
