Operatives with responsibility for the installation, monitoring and maintenance of ground support systems.


To provide participants with the skills and knowledge to safely install, maintain and monitor ground support systems and obtain the appropriate City & Guilds Certification


The course covers the following areas of activity with respect to deep excavation technology:

  • Legislation pertaining to work in deep excavations
  • Hazards associated with work in deep excavations
  • Identification of unsafe situations
  • Identification of appropriate ground support systems
  • Installation in a safely manner, various ground support systems
  • Removal in a safe manner, various ground support systems
  • Knowledge of installation and removal techniques
  • Supervisors/Managers may attend and complete the course, however the certificate awarded will state "Operative" in line with  City & Guilds registration of the award


    On succesful completion of the course, candidates will be able to:

    01     State legislation pertaining to work in deep excavations

    02     State the hazards associated with work in deep excavations

    03     Identify unsafe situations

    04     Identify appropriate ground support systems

    05     Install safely various ground support systems

    06     Remove safely, various ground support systems

    08     Demonstrate knowledge of installation and removal techniques


    Pre knowledge assessment using examples/slides depicting actual on site installations of ground support systems. Trainer led theory sessions, followed by practical activity of installation and removal of Pincher System, Close Fitting Sheets, Open Poling, and Hydraulic Support Systems.


    Existing knowledge of work in excavations.
