Participants

Managers/Supervisors with responsibility for monitoring and maintenance of ground support systems.

Aim

To provide participants with the skills and knowledge to safely maintain and monitor ground support systems and achieve the appropriate City & Guilds Certification.

Objectives

The course covers the following areas of activity with respect to deep excavation technology:

  • Legislation pertaining to work in deep excavations
  • Hazards associated with work in deep excavations
  • Identification of unsafe situations
  • Identification of appropriate ground support systems
  • Inspection of  ground support systems
  • Knowledge of installation and removal techniques
  • Content

    Candidates will complete units 01 04 inclusive and 07, 08 as follows:

    01     State legislation pertaining to work in deep excavations

    02     State the hazards associated with work in deep excavations

    03     Identify unsafe situations

    04     Identify appropriate ground support systems

    07     Inspect ground support systems

    08     Demonstrate knowledge of installation and removal techniques

     

    Methods

    Pre knowledge assessment using examples/slides depicting actual on site installations of ground support systems. Trainer led theory sessions, followed by practical activity of installation and removal of Pincher System, Close Fitting Sheets, Open Poling, and Hydraulic Support Systems.

    Pre-requisites

    Existing knowledge of work in excavations.
