NRSWA Unit 2 Signing, Lighting & Guarding

Experienced operatives who are required to sign, light & guard on the highway


To provide support and direction to assist experienced operatives to comply with the requirements of The New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 with respect to signing, lighting & guarding activities


Upon successful completion of the course, participants should be able to: • Carry out signing, lighting and guarding of road works as laid down in the safety at street works and road works code of practice • Carry out the installation of portable traffic signals • Undertake the unit 2 assessment in signing, lighting and guarding


The course will cover:
  • Basic principles of signing, lighting and guarding of road works
  • Signing for pedestrian and vehicular traffic
  • Portable traffic control signals
  • Video presentation (safer road works ahead)
  • Practical exercises
  • Written & oral questionnaires
  • Unit 2 assessment


Lecture, demonstration, practical exercises and assessment


Knowledge of the requirements of signing, lighting and guarding.
